AQUATIC THERAPY

Aquatic therapy at Balanced Body Pilates is so different, we call it AQUALATES. In our heated (93 degrees), 10’ x 14’ private, state-of-the-art treatment pool we provide an ideal environment for aquatic therapy the Pilates way – based on Pilates principles.

Each patient is treated for a full hour by a Pilates-trained physical therapist specializing in aquatic therapy. The water depth is 4 feet in the majority of the pool and 5 feet only in a small section of the pool (which we use for gentle stretching). Even if you can’t swim, you will be able to stand in the pool with the therapist at your side, assisting you at all times.

The pool environment is quiet, calm, and pleasant, allowing our patients to hear instructions and concentrate. With an ozonator in the pool we need much less chlorine, so sensitive individuals will not experience skin and respiratory problems. There is a lovely Japanese garden outside the pool windows, adding to the tranquility of the setting.

Aquatic therapy is often the most effective initial treatment for patients who have extremely weak core strength, with extreme difficulty in walking or standing. It is also ideal for patients with rheumatoid and osteo arthritis, fibromyalgia, and chronic pain.

Our pool is the ideal place for rehab following knee and hip replacement surgery. Pilates-based aquatic therapy reduces the time it takes for patients to return to normal functional activities, and there is MUCH LESS PAIN than with conventional physical therapy.

As with all Pilates-based therapies, AQUALATES focuses on the core, resulting in a reduction in stress on the extremities, easier and more efficient movement, decrease in chronic pain, and improvement in flexibility and balance. The heat and buoyancy of the water provide the weightless environment that Pilates equipment simulates with springs.
